AFSC Middle East Apprentice Announcement

The Iowa office of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is looking for a temporary part-time apprentice to help with the Middle East program work.

Responsibilities include helping to facilitate and implement the program committee’s work related to Israel-Palestine. Particular focus will be on building support on central Iowa college campuses for a Fall 2011 conference addressing US policy in Israel-Palestine.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job title: Middle East Program Apprentice Supervisor: Area Program Coordinator Location: Des Moines, Iowa

Position description: This specific-term (February 2011-October 2011), part-time (20 hours per week), temporary apprentice position is intended to support the work of the Iowa Program Coordinator in facilitating the Middle East Peace Education Project, and the planning committee for an October 2011 conference on US Policy in Israel-Palestine. A critical aspect of the apprentice position is outreach to central Iowa college campuses on the issue of peace with justice in Israel-Palestine.

Hours of work include evenings and weekends.

This is an apprentice position requiring orientation and training structured by the apprentice supervisor.

Job responsibilities:

Co-facilitate and staff committee meetings related to AFSC Middle East Peace work. With supervision and guidance from the Program Coordinator- Plan meeting agendas.Support subcommittees in follow through on decisions.Help with materials development. Provide media
and publicity support.

Outreach to central Iowa colleges:Using varied media, including social networks, to connect with campus peace and justice groups to develop support for the October 2011conference. Collaborate with campus groups to present relevant forums on the campus.

Qualifications
Skills:
Excellent people skills, including strong listening skills.
Ability to articulate AFSC’s commitment to nonviolence in social change work.
Respectful of differing perspectives and opinions.
Ability to work toward consensus.
Attention to detail.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Familiarity with social networking tools.
Proficiency in research skills.
Proficiency in computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook

Compensation: $13 per hour.
